Whalen Hosted Al Gore in 2000

A reader has broken this story: Mike Whalen played host to Al Gore during his 2000 Presidention campaign.

On January 24, 2000, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reports:

From charging down a gantlet of glitter-painted pompom girls, to turning his fire on the Republicans, Gore was in general election spirits even before the final verdict of Iowa's Democratic caucuses.

"I'm a fighter," he said when asked Monday at lunch what sets him apart. "For 23 years I have been unafraid to take on special interests." Questioned by reporters as he ate at the Iowa Machine Shed diner in Davenport, Gore said his experience also was important.

On January 25, 2000, a Boston Globe correspondent covering the race reported:

Gore, whose campaign was widely portrayed as being in disarray just a few months ago, held a consistent lead in the polls during the last several weeks. But he headed into caucus day insisting he was taking nothing for granted.

''I'm not counting my chickens before they're hatched,'' he said yesterday morning in Davenport, where he shook hands with diners and ate fried chicken at the Iowa Machine Shed, a restaurant known for its pork.

Um is it really that big of a deal that Gore had an event at the machine shed? Guys running a business. Wouldn't that be kind of like criticizing your buddy Kennedy over every client DCI lobbying firm has ever had.

Let's get off Mike's back on this one. Go Mike Go!

Paid clients and volunteering to host Al Gore during a presidential campaign against W are NOT the same thing and you know it.

Remeber the question here is whether Whalen is really a Republican.

And that question was just answer yet again....

I disagree. Having a presidential candidate come to your restaurant as a business owner is a coup...no matter which party he is. If you are going to criticize Mike for that, I really hope Brian chose his clients carefully in the past because you should throw stones when you live in a glass house.

This is a silly post that just furthers your purpose to smear Mike and promote Brian. It has no value other than that.

I will preface this by saying - I do NOT like Mike Whalen. I do NOT think he is a Republican.

But this news article does not clearly say he "volunteered" to host anything. It sounds like Gore rented the room and paid for the food.

Brian Kennedy - your bloggers have jumped the shark on this one.

Go Bill Dix!!!!!

Hey Anon 12:56.

Clearly, you must have gotten your ire up at some point over the past two weeks and started watching blog traffic on behalf of Bill.

Reminder: Scoop Iowa has requested your Dix side of the story on the immigration bill. Why don't you put down your legislative review of the bill and prove who's legal and legislative analysis is more sound: Brian Kennedy's or Bill Dix's.

The longer it goes without a sound analysis, and today's DSM Register article was NOT an analysis, the more likely I think that Bill really doesn't know what's going on with legislation. And that's probably not someone I'm gonna promote to Congress.

Scoop:

You know, part of being a Republican (or Democrat) is being loyal. To your party, your ideals, your friends.

If someone is a Republican, and a high profile one at that, as Whalen contends to be, then certain responsibilities come along with that.

Like not whoring out your business to Al Gore. Do you think other, long time, dyed in the wool Republicans in the 1st would have sold out to have the Veep at their businesses? No way. They would have chosen principle over profits.

Whalen is gone from this race. He's done. Now, he'll still spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in a failed attempt to recover his community standing, but running for Congress was a really, really bad move for him.

Wish there were a way to find out if Gore 2000 paid to rent the space or if Whalen contributed the space. (Hmmm financial reports?)

Also, how many restaurants does Whalen own? Does he have to approve every reservation at every restaurant before the person is cleared to have a party there?

What, NO DEMOCRATS are allowed to eat at HOA?

this accusation is BS. Go with the mud that sticks!

9:38 AM, March 20, 2006
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay. Whalen is an arrogant ass that doesn't campaign, won't talk to the press, and is in this race for some sort of ego gratification.

Those seem to be sticking pretty well.

Because people who know him best, know it's true.

Approve reservations? WTF!

How many Machine Sheds are in Eastern Iowa? ONE

How many Machine Sheds are in his hometown of davenport? ONE

How many times do presidential nominees book an event without advance screening? NONE

Which candidate is running for the GOP 1st CD nomination and has a proven track record of helping fight against the Republican party and its candidates? ONE Hint: His name rhymes with Fail'n.

Whalen is either a total jackass (sign of a real D) or totally incompetant. Either way, he'll never get my vote.

Actually RINO hunter is wrong. Most Democrats running or thinking about running for president show up at the Machine Shed eventually. Sometimes they hold their "event" in a separate room. Other times they are there just doing the grip and grin and eating - which, like VP Gore - is what many of them do.

Of course it was approved that candidate Gore would visit the Machine Shed. A presidential candidate doesn't just show up for lunch. There was plenty of opportunity for Whalen to tell Gore to go someplace else, but he chose not to. He wanted the free advertising for his restaurants just like last fall when he wanted his restaurants to provide free advertising for his campaign. For Whalen, it's profits over principle.

And.... the other Whalen missteps?

-The Nagle $ contribution against Nussle? Didn't know about it?

-The Iowa Democratic Party $ contribution? Didn't know about it?

-The support for Ross Perot in '92? Didn't know about it?

-His support for a higher social security tax? Didn't know about it?

-His bringing riverboat gambling to Eastern Iowa? Didn't know about it?

And now the he "didn't know about it" when it came to the democratic nominee for president just SHAZAM shows up at his restaurant. Nobody told him he was coming.... uh huh.

Let me guess, there was no controlling legal authority for Whalen to pay attention to his visit. Am I right?

25K? Really? Shit, Whalen could give me only 10k and I'll show him some polling with even greater looking numbers like:

Whalen 157%
Kennedy 4%
Dix 2.34576879%

I'm sure people would believe those phantom numbers too! LOL, Whalen I'm sure would push them on us at least.

Can you believe this guy? I can't, nor do I believe his Ministers of Propoganda Dumass and Grubbs.

No surprise if you're a Whalen supporter...hell you're probably on his staff. It's hard for Whalen's team to know what's going on on the ground in the First District when all they ever do is fly over it.

Again, assuming you and I aren't "staffers, blah blah blah", you and I can at least debate the issues listed above. Why can't you provide an explanation fo Whalen's actions? Seriously, It is not impossible to win me over and prove me wrong. It happens all the time. You just have to try though.

I'm not looking for a list I just want you to name 1. Somebody's getting touchy I think we touched a nerve.

12:13 PM, March 24, 2006
Blogger Liberal Lion said...

Its a bit of a late response... I bet if you dig a little deeper you will find Whalen didn't actually "host" Al Gore, but Al Gore was in his restaurant. By the same token, I suppose every time a Democrat eats in his restaurant he is "hosting" liberals and thus must be supportive of their cause and ideology. Seems like a stretch.

As for his contribution to Nagle, I bet Nagle was the incumbent and Nussle was the challenger. Practically speaking, for a man who wants to preserve his influence, you go with Nagle.

Listen, I don't like Mike Whalen at all. I think he is the most dangerous Republican running because he appeals viscerally to the 1sts and Iowa's knack for ticket splitting. He is a pragmatist, who frankly is MUCH more conservative (though moderate in appearance) than his likely opponent the probably moderate, unformed (though liberal in appearance) Bruce Braley.

If Republicans pick Whalen they have a horse race against Braley. If Republicans choose Whalen their chances for holding the seat look better than if they choose Dix or Kennedy.

Rather than pointing out isolated points in Whalen's past, shouldn't critics examine the totality of his record? Did Whalen support Reagan, Bush I, Bush II? What state legislative candidates has Whalen supported? Has he supported Nussle being elected congressman? What about Governor Brandstad and the GOP featherweights who faced Vilsack? How many GOP candidates paraded through the Machine Shed in 2000 - Bush, Alexander, Dole?

9:54 PM, March 24, 2006
Anonymous Anonymous said...

He donated to Nagle against Nussle in 1992. Both were incumbents. Redistricting had put them together. Whalen had a choice to make...Republican or Democrat.

In regards to Bush I, Mike Whalen is part of the reason he was defeated. Whalen was a huge supporter of Ross Perot, the spoiler that gave the election to Bill Clinton.

So, you can see that while he MAY be able to beat a Democrat in the general, there's no guarantee for Republicans that he would represent them any better than the Democrat.

Mike Whalen is a Republican to the bone. I worked at the Machine Shed in 1996 when Al Gore showed up on a Sunday at lunch time unannounced to press some flesh. We graciously hosted him and his entourage even though it killed the business for the lunch rush. I am sure Gore remembered the hospitality and decided to head back in 2000. Chances are that Whalen just happened to be in town as Gore probably just showed up announced again. Not much Whalen could do in the case but be a good host.
